If you look up the college on College Board's "Big Future" site under "Paying", there is a yearly amount for "estimated personal expenses". I mention because we've had 2 go through college recently, different states and were surprised how on target it was. Also it's nice to have something published to show the student to say, "there! you should be able to live-off-of-that! amount!"

I went to school in the south and lived off of $50 / week (not including clothes, rent, car insurance, cell phone, etc.)

Going out to eat is about ~$15/meal. Drinks are $3/beer. Cabs are about $5/each way. If you send $200 - $300/month they will be fine.

Exactly.

I think my adult son/daughter would be embarrassed to accept $100+ week from Mommy. He hasn't gotten an allowance since middle school.

My parents helped me out with everything but for spending money, between $50 - $200 a month.

Holy crap! $500/month is what we pay for DS's college tuition...

What did u need this for? The dates? The condoms? That is much much dollars.

Not really. My DC spends about $300/month on groceries, cooking for himself. If I gave him $500/month, the remaining $200 would go to toiletries and spending money (e.g. movies, the occasional ice cream cone or whatever).
