If you are getting offended or being sensitive by some of the comments ppl are writing - you are going to deal with this forever when your child comes running home crying bc kids are making fun of her name. I am not talking about the name Dixie in general, but ALL kids get made fun either for their name, or their looks or just because, and if you have adults commenting on it - what do you think kids are going to do. It is just a reality check. I have heard of the most normal names getting made fun of growing up. If you are the OP saying "I cant believe the comments on an anonymous board, especially one like DCUM where ppl thrive on amusement) then you have another thing coming when your kid is in grade school.

I write this as someone whose name, while not regional, is not a serious name. It is a problem.

If you name your daughter Angel, some people will think she's a stripper.
If you name her Dixie, I'm not quite sure what people will think but few will think she's the next President.

Oh and meant to add, that out of all the suggestions, I like Dixie Marie the best.

I initially thought of the scene in Austin Powers, where Gwyneth Paltrow played "Dixie Normous." But I still like the name. It's different. And so what if it's southern. There's nothing wrong with southern.

OP, I went to college with a Dixie (conservative southern school). It didn't even occur to anyone to tease her about her name. For a cute blonde college girl in the south, the name was great! I say ignore everyone (or laugh at the posts) and stick with Dixie and make the middle name more conventional and conservative. I promise, as she grows up, no one will make fun of here. I actually think the comments on here are pretty instructive. The child is going to have to deal with this name for her entire life and, in many opinions (incl mine) it is a troubling name. Putting the origins and affiliations with some bad times (civil war) aside, it is a name often used as a nickname or for dogs. You want to choose it, that is your right. But, I will bet that the child will spend a lot of time dealing with comments like she's heard on this board. Best to hear it now when you still have time to change the name.

And, I don't think it is "cruel" to point out the perils of certain names. This is not a good one. And, I'm not saying it to be mean. The fact that OP did not ask for opinions doesn't mean opinions shouldn't be given. (Nor has that stopped anyone before.)

I don't think people are being cruel in their responses. It is best she find out now what connotations this name has. That way she can prepare her child for a lifetime of dealing with it.
