Indian parent here..Your concern is very valid. Indian children tend to gravitate towards other Indian children and a white kid in a group of brown kids will stick out like a sore thumb - the Indian kids will talk about cultural activities outside of school which may or may not be appealing to a white kid - another thing is the food..Imagine being the only kid bringing sandwiches when the others at the table have typical Indian lunches with rice and spicy stuff. Just like Loudoun County has Ashburn and South Riding, Montgomery County has Clarksburg, Howard County has Ellicott City - Indians buy houses where there are other Indians. If one person moves in, soon there will be many more flocking there.. Sadly, that has driven out other folks who feel overwhelmed..
Pros - The Indian kids are generally well behaved and don't challenge the teachers authority, you don't have to worry too much about drugs and academically they stand out. Family values is a big thing with Indians.
Cons - There will be many nerds and if your kid is not a nerd, he may not fit in..Being a white minority in a largely Indian crowd will mean difficulty making friends who talk about things your kid will have no clue about..even in the neighborhood, you'll stick out like a sore thumb - you will have to attend Diwali parties and other Indian themed parties (or they may leave you out). Then there's the language issue - kids will talk in several other languages (there are many in India). Indian kids' ideas of fun will be different than a typical white kid's.
I'm not saying you will have to run far to Prince William County - if you don't mind the culture and your kid is nerdy, you may fit right in..
btw, I don't live in Virginia. These are just my observations - at my kids preschool, I see black kids with black kids, Indians with Indians, whites with whites - the kids know at that young age the color of their skin and tend to gravitate to similar looking people..So a high school white kid who doesn't have too many other white kids in his class might feel left out..
