I would go with the better house in Henry district.
We are a white family with kids at Tuckahoe and we couldn't care less about diversity - I would have no hesitation about my kids going to Henry.

Tuckahoe has no diversity, and has a terrible reputation for integrating children with special needs into the classroom.

I have to disagree about special needs. Tuckahoe was fantastic about working with our special needs child, and he was fully integrated into a regular classroom with appropriate pull-out and push-in support. I can't speak for everyone, but my own personal experience was a positive one.

I live in the Williamsburg-Yorktown district and wish I didn't. I've done everything in my power to avoid it. I've sent a kid to W/L and another to H/B and one to private.

It might be great for some, but I wouldn't say highly coveted.

I live near Westover in Tuckahoe district and my kids go there. When I was looking for a larger house - I looked in Penrose and Westover. I love, love Penrose. Go with the house!!

Just to clarify. ALL of Tuckahoe is a feeder to Yorktown, regardless of whether they are zoned for Swanson (about 75%) or Williamsburg (about 25%) (those figures vary from year to year).

You can apply for W/L's IB program or HB or various other things for high school. (and obviously there are middle school choices as well), but the ENTIRE Tuckahoe district is in the Yorktown boundary.

So, to the original question - I think there is a decent amount of difference between those two schools. Maybe ask for a visit with the principal or go observe for an hour or two at each school. As everyone said, if diversity is a concern, you'll get a more diverse population (culturally, ethnically, economically, etc.) at Henry. That doesn't make one better than the other, it's just different.

We are at Tuckahoe and we and our kids love it. Terrific principal and great staff. Not as diverse racially or socio economically as Henry for sure. I've heard great things about Henry too. That neighborhood (Penrose, Arlington Heights) could be changing significantly with the Career Center space being targeted by APS for significant expansion one way or another. Keep that in mind if you buy there.

I would seriously consider renting and then buy once there's more clarity about the new ES zones (2019). Unless you are a stone's throw from the school you are seeking (less than .5 miles), in which case there's an extremely high chance you won't be moved. This of course excludes Key and Claremont the two immersion programs.
