Could be an evolutionary biology thing to make the most available-and-fertile females stand out from those unavailable and fertile. I think women in the latter stages of pregnancy until their youngest is 3-4 look a hot mess. Skipping regular haircuts, ill-fitting clothes and/or wearing only work out gear, often looking overall tired and frazzled. Obviously we all know moms who seem unphased by motherhood and look amazing in spite of it all.

However, it seems as their kids get older trips to the gym, more attention to the beauty details are easier. Lots of moms give themselves a makeover around that time.
