It is a little bit confusing, because we have two different things going on -- instructional days and teacher work days. Usually, when we have an inclement weather closing, students and teachers both stay home so they just both make up that day. But for the Day without a Woman, kids stayed home but staff reported. That creates a little imbalance in trying to make things up.

To work it out the superintendent basically removed the 7.5 hour "teacher workday without kids" on Monday June 12th. That's when teachers clean up their rooms and get checked out by the principal for the year. We don't have that now -- instead we have 3 days with kids, but with a 2 hour early dismissal each day -- so 6 hours total without kids instead of 7.5.

No one is working an extra day.

Yes, there are 2 student days to be made up. Students need to attend 180 instructional days and they missed two. One was the "Day without a Woman" and one was the snow day. They missed those two instructional days and therefore need to (have the opportunity to) attend 2 additional instructional days.

In the original calendar their last day of instruction was to be Friday June 9th. 2 additional instructional days have been added -- Monday June 12th and Tuesday June 13th. These are not "extra" instructional days, they are replacements for the two missed days, bringing the total instructional days back to 180.

That takes care of the kids.

There is only ONE teacher workday to make up. That's because teachers did not work the one snow day. Teachers did work on the "Day Without a Woman" (or took leave). So teachers only need to make up one work day.

In the original calendar the last day of teachers working was to be Monday, June 12th. 1 additional teacher duty day has been added -- Tuesday June 13th. This is not an "extra" day of work. This is a replacement for the snowday when teachers did not work (in a school).

I'm really not sure why the teacher's union is having trouble understanding this, or explaining it to you?

I agree that the late notice was a problem. I'm a PGCPS teacher and am upset because I made three dr's/dentist appointments for myself and the kids on Tuesday, and have to rearrange. I figured a month out since no one changed the calendar it was safe to do so but... my bad.

Also since school is going 2 extra days they will have to pay for the food for lunches, pay for bus drivers, cafeteria staff, support staff, etc. I am just thinking of all the food that will go to waste. The possibility of people not showing up to work because of plans and vacations al ready being made.

Like someone else stated before the decision was made extremely later than usual. I get the 180 day rule however I feel the county planned poorly.

The teacher contract is to work 192 days.

Originally teachers were supposed to work until Monday June 12th. That was their last work day.

There was one snow day. Teachers did not work on that day. So to make up that work day, one additional day was added to the school year. The makeup work day is Tuesday June 13th.

Right. The issue is late notice, not the fact that the school district is using 2 of its pre-announced makeup days.

I'm just pointing out that there are no built in makeup days. Some people seem to think there are extra days already in the calendar.

It was first posted on Facebook, and about an hour later, teachers got it via work email.

Today they sent out a second notice, with a more thorough explanation. At least they realized that more explanation was needed.

In the future, they should announce the makeup day when the school closure is announced, IMO.

For example:

Code Red; Schools closed. Makeup day will be Monday June 12th (unless waiver is granted)

Also, there's NO reason to apply for a waiver when you have only missed 2 days of school and you have 4 identified as makeup days!! It really makes no sense.
