This past year he's enjoyed these series: all of Rick Riordan's various series, re-reading Harry Potter (I think kids could re-read them every couple of years and pick up new pieces to the stories), Divergent, The Immortal Nicholas Flammel, Alex Rider, The Giver and follow up books, Hatchett and follow up books, Gregor the Overlander, The Unwanteds, Ranger's Apprentice, and some series about Disney after dark (I realize that sounds weird!). He even likes nonfiction cut from the series mold - Genius Guide to ___ (Presidents, geography, etc), the interactive history choose your own adventure books, Guts and Glory, Horrible Histories.

Which one?
The one by Jonathan Hennessey. Also, the graphic novel trilogy by John Lewis, et al., about the civil rights movement has excellent reviews. I just bought that box set for DS.
