My 14 year old gets what seems to be a fairly modest allowance based on this thread, but she never seems to ask us for money when she has plans so we must be on the right track with the amount. Good topic, very interesting replies.

I posted that I don't give an allowance, we just pay for going to movies, lunches with friends, etc. If I don't have that much extra on specific week, I just tell them, sorry, next week. So some weeks they might to to several outings and then nothing the week after. My kids don't ask for much generally.

My 11yo receives $11/week in allowance and will periodically deposit it in his checking account - he holds back some so he has cash, but will use his check card for any large purchase. He also receives a mix of cash and gift cards for Christmas and his birthday.

His allowance is mostly for toys/comic books for himself. We pay for everything else – clothes, food, movies…

We also give an allowance and they get mostly gift cards and checks for birthdays, graduations, Christmas, Hanukkah, and sometimes just for being adored grandchildren ?. We pay for clothing, gas, meals, etc.
