I think my kids watched it at that age. My 15 year old (youngest) knows every episode and loves the podcast "The Office Ladies".

Also loves Parks and Rec and Superstore (like a PP)!

My DD loves the office and modern family. I’m ok with her watching them. They are funny.

But it’s much more complex than that. Obviously Michael Scott is not supposed to be appropriate- that’s the whole joke. The question is, is it ok to laugh at someone for being inappropriate? Because that’s the entire premise of the show.

There’s definitely some inappropriate stuff. I think the bigger issue is whether the child can understand that the type of jokes aren’t appropriate for school - all the race and gender stuff. In some ways Michael Scott is a character that could not be done today because using racial/gender discomfort as humor isn’t really that acceptable because it’s sort of a covert way to continue to make the unacceptable jokes. An 11 year old may not be old enough to understand that and could get themselves into trouble.

Also, I think it’s a totally valid family choice not to let your tween consume a lot of edgy/rude/irreverant media. My kid watches the Simpsons nonstop, but I totally get that his bestie’s family has a more conservative take on media consumption. We just happen to be a more edgy and funny family; but that’s not their culture, and that’s totally valid.

Does your kid understand it’s a mockumentary and that Michael Scott and Dwight Schrutte are jokes for their behavior and beliefs? If yes, it’s fine. If not, start there.

It’s not any of those things. It’s a comedy. The only people who would think that would be straight white people.

I'm 11 now and the Office is my favorite show. But I am very mature for my age, I understand why my parents don't want me to watch it (but I do anyways 😄) but I'd say if you're kid can understand the content , let them watch it.

I agree that The Office is fine. And as long as we're offering other options, don't forget Bob's Burgers! It's really fun to watch both as a kid and an adult.

I watched this show when I was 12 and loved it. I’m very mature for my age and understood all the sexual jokes, watched some episodes with my dad.

My 11 (almost 12) year old has watched it. She thought Dwight was funny but that's about it. She didn't have much of an interest in it. She absolutely loves Friends and now Schitt's Creek (because I watch it).

My 10 yr ok DD watched the entire series and loved it. There were definitely some teaching moments and some stuff that just went over her head. We have older children so it’s a challenge to find shows to watch together. She has seen a lot of shows that are probably a little inappropriate for that age - oh well. That being said, I didn’t let her watch it by herself.
