Generally larger breed dogs tend to be more oafish and calmer. Once they are 2 years plus.

My small breed is like this. She is calm and doesn't need a lot of exercise and stays home just fine while we go to work. She gets walked 4 or 5 times a day (we live in a high rise condo, so no yard to let her out into). When I come home she loves to lay in my lap and she sleeps in bed with us.

Sorry.

I'm the OP of the other thread whom you wanted to contact. Thank you very much for your kind offer. I know the dog would be happy in your home. Unfortunately my husband doesn't want to give her away...

OP, you sound like me: an honest to God dog person. It's in my DNA. I couldn't be in a house long term without a dog. They're not just pets, but companions, friends. My 14 yr old mutt is sitting at my feet as I type this. She's everything to me. So...you won't be really happy until you get a dog.

Would you please adopt that golden retriever from the nasty lady? She hates that sweet dog.

+1. I was just thinking the same thing.

Come on people. You can agree to meet at a venue....everyone wins, including sweet Lab.

OP I feel the same way and we have only 1 cat.

We decided to wait, till the cat dies, and then get a dog. I expect its a long way off as the cat is only 3 and likely to live a long time (indoor only).

Wait it out, and get a dog when you have more time. We have a dog, two teens, and it is a ton of work plus fur everywhere, walks, grooming, vet bills. Once you have a dog, you might regret it. When you were a kid and before kids, your parents too care of the dog, trust me, it will all fall on you.

It sounds like you should get a dog. As others have mentioned, there are lots of care options for when you travel. Your kids are old enough to share the feeding/walking responsibility, and not all dogs are high energy or need long daily walks. We have two dogs, cats, a toddler, and another on the way. My two dogs are part of the family and I love raising kids with them around. I think it's really valuable for kids to have a dog (but I'm a biased crazy dog person). We have a pet sitter come into the house when we travel and a 10-15 minute walk is just part of our morning routine. I don't see any reason why you couldn't make it work if it's what you really want.

We have the opposite situation. My DH wants a dog so much it hurts. And I don't want one at all. Ours died in December and while I loved him, it's a relief not to have another mouth to feed (so to speak). They're so much work and money and mess. And yes, he'd be a full partner in caring for the dog, but it's too much stress for me and thank God he realizes it and isn't pushing it. The time for a dog will come. Now's not it.
