Here's what I don't understand, and my SIL is like this too. Every single person I know who humblebrags frequently on FB has tons of FB friends posting supportive comments like "Wow, that's amazing, good for you" or "You deserve that Mercedes," etc. and has tons of FB friends and in real life. The ones I know who never humblebrag on FB (like me) rarely get any comments in general and don't have many friends on FB or real life. So my question is, if humblebragging is seen as so annoying and self-serving, then why are the humblebraggers so popular????

I know someone who is a braggart from modest beginnings, and she once asked a mutual friend and I to lunch, and said that she could work with "anytime that worked for us" because she "didn't have any travel plans until summer". Travel plans? Wtf. Lunch takes 2 hours tops, but way to throw in there that you are so well travelled!

Last time we saw her (not local), she picked a fight with my HFA kid (aka her nephew) bc she didn't like the topic he wanted to discuss (yet MIL has always claimed how great she is with special needs kids). This is one of many examples of nightmarish behavior. Fortunately, we live halfway across the country.

This is mine too! She'll post how she got a new car, picture of her in front of the car, all her ridiculous friends comment "you go girl!" and "you deserve it!" when I'm sitting there trying to figure out why she is buying a new car when she quite literally has ZERO DOLLARS in her savings account and was working a temp job. Or she'll post about going on vacation somewhere exotic, like she really earned that, when in fact her parents let her tag along on their vacation and are paying her whole way (they are never mentioned in the posts).

Agree with the posters who say she's very insecure - which can be a result of her background or can be due to other things. It sounds annoying but consider this an opportunity to work on your compassion.

My SIL is the same way. Low income background also. I learned a while ago that FB is for friends, not family, in my case. Life has been so much better since I made this switch.
