Whenever we go to a beach (lake, river, ocean, whatever), we collect shells, sand, and other findings. We put them in jars when we get home and label them with the name of the beach and year of the trip.
We now have a shelf with (so far, and for example) freshwater mussel shells from Michigan, sand from Maryland, sand and whole shells from Los Angeles, sea glass from Glass Beach in Mendocino County CA, and so on.

I'm the OP here and I have also made a post about my own clutter before too, ha!
Thanks everyone! I used to go the magnet / mug route but now I have so many of those that I don't need anymore so I need something else! And I'm Jewish so can't collect ornaments
. But I like the idea of trying to get something the location is really known for or artwork. I might be able to display all of the artwork in my basement - kind of a gallery wall of trip type things. I have a big map on the wall down there already.

The kitschiest magnet available. I let my kid pick it out. She has an eye for kitsch.

Art, jewelry, or a piece of clothing - not usually a t-shirt, but something that reminds me of the place. A nice sundress from a warm tropical vacation, a cozy sweater from a winter ski break, that sort of thing. Things I can use and appreciate every day.

Either something useful that fits into my everyday life (like a piece of clothing), a piece of jewelry ("Oh, where'd you get those earrings?" Romania.), or a carved or lacquered box. I love boxes. What's fun now is looking back at all the little things I've put in them over the years at different points in my life.

The best travel collection I've ever seen was small boxes, like pill box or ring box size, displayed on a shelf in a bedroom. I've borrowed that idea and I've got about 10 so far, painted lacquer from Russia, Bavarian porcelain, cedar from Muir woods, etc.
