They are not difficult at all. Have you looked at turbo tax? I can do it for $1k!

I paid $85 to H&R block to file my federal and VA forms. I've been happy with them, though I found the process slightly more confusing this year. I did my taxes by hand for years, but sometimes the site finds loopholes I didn't know about, so it's worth the money to me. I'm in finance/accounting, so math is easy for me.

I'll just add that we are not American either so prefer to outsource this. We do check it over and unfortunately find stuff every time. In fact doing and amendment now since one mortgages interest was left out last year and only the new refi one was out in- despite sending both to acct!
