Absolutely. Smith is working within a system here, just like any other elected or appointed official. Yes, he could tell frightened folks what they want to hear, but it would be a lie. He can't bar immigrants from schools, he can't break federal law (nor do I suspect he wants to). He can't tell us that every high school will have video cameras monitored 8 hours a day. He can't tell us nothing awful will ever happen inside a public school.

NP here. What did he say that impressed you? The article I read in the Post did not provide specifics about his statements other than MCPS lauds itself on being welcoming to all.
