Costco is great for what you can get there, but there are downsides: limited variety, some items are only available seasonally, it's not always the cheapest, and everything must be bought in bulk. I'd get tired of buying massive packs of the same 4-5 vegetables every week, occasionally I want to buy a single dinner's worth of something different.

So, like others, I take a hybrid approach, alternating Costco trips for bulk purchase of the basics with another store (Wegmans in your case) for variety.

Right? I go to Costco every 3 weeks and Wegmans once a week and backfill from Harris Teeter.

Because if I paid for a Costco membership I'd feel like I want to do 90% of my shopping there. I'm cheap!

Sounds neurotic.

Costco is not economical for everything. Who cares about the membership? I get at least $200 back a year in Costco cash.

You are cheap, but will burn a bunch of gas driving 25 min to a grocery store? Logical.

NP. Have you seen Costco prices for gas? Totally worth it.

I love Wegmans! But it is expensive. We are vegetarian if it matters.
I shop at Costco, Lotte for non-mainstream produce, and occasionally TJ/ Wegmans for what I'd consider "regular" grocery store items.

I grew up with Wegmans, so if I could only choose one grocery store, it would be that. You can get pretty much everything there if needed. Sadly, the closest one to me is still over a half hour away, so I generally alternate between TJs and Giant, with Costco once every 1-2 months.

This is exactly what we do. Costco is worth it for the meds/vitamins alone.

Wegmans weekly plus TJs and Costco once a month. Family packs at Wegmans (or Aldi) for meats are about the same as costco and take up less space.
We struggle to get through Costco volumes of highly perishable fruit/veggie

If I could only ever shop at one grocery store again, it would be Wegman's. Maybe you could save money alternating between various stores, but (1) that's a pain and (2) Wegman's is amazing. Right now, we mostly shop at Aldi, with stops as needed at Costco, TJ's, and Giant (for the few random things that can't be found elsewhere)--one store per week.

If we had a Wegman's closer, that would be it for us. DH is from Western NY and I've come to love Wegman's through him. I'm fairly certain I could live out my days wandering between the cheese shop and the bakery.

They're only ever a better deal then Wegmans on their circular ad sales and they are never a better deal than Aldi. Good to know! Yes, I like and trust the Wegmans family pack chicken, which is $1.99/lb. I gave up on Costco after I simply could not fit the giant packs of food in my fridge, pantry, etc. I buy almost everything at Wegmans, including beauty stuff, prescriptions, paper goods, etc. I don’t miss Costco because I found their clothing to be low quality, and I do not use glasses or contacts. I thought the tire shop was an oversubscribed hassle (would rather pay a little more for better service).
To the poster who asked about employees, Wegmans is consistently ranked as one of the best employers in the country.

To the extent less expensive, generally yes, in any event, figuring in participation charges yet Wegmans has been attempting to contend nearer with clubs with their Family Pack things, which is simply Wegmans marking for mass. The last time I was at Costco (I don't have an enrollment, yet NYS law disallows club stores from requiring participation for liquor deals and there was a Costco-elite lager I was after) there was an acceptable choice and meat/produce looked very much tended and loaded.

If there were a Wegman's closer in, I'd do my shopping there. Right now it's Costco and WF with Harris Teeter to fill on emergency basis.

Pretty good I think, e.g.,

Wegmans for sure! I grew up with it and wish there was one closer to us. It's a great one-stop shop store. I'd still go to TJs occasionally but Wegmans would be my go to.
