Subject: Name of Girl- Barbara
At 48, I am the youngest Barbara I know of (besides the Bush twin). It's also a family name for us.
I like my name, but dislike how I feel it dates me. But bring on the baby Barbaras! I think it's ripe for a comeback.
As for nicknames, people automatically seem to shorten it to Barb, which I don't like a lot. As an adult, I have always been Barbara, although relatives and old friends call me Barb. Barbie is just plain awful to me, like the doll. I've thought about Ara as nickname for me, but haven't tried it out.
As for Varvara, it just sounds odd to me and I worry kids would make fun of it and create their own nicknames that might not be so great.

And I dont know if it should pronounce Varvara or BE Varvara. Hoping i can ask enough people to get some clarity in deciding.....
I'm a bit more partial to Barbara with a cute nickname.

My wife is a Barbara (the only reason I clicked on this) so we're partial to it. 
My wife always hated to be Babs and Barbie. She goes by Barbara, or occasionally will accept Barb (mostly from people who have known her a long time).
I've known women who went by Bara and Ara, if you want something more unique for a nickname.

+1 to Birdie! Works for all ages IMO. Also, it doesn't need to be your initials - nicknames don't need a "reason." Just "her name is Barbara and we're calling her [nickname]."

What's your last name start with? Maybe it's a better letter than BC? I have nothing for BC (other than birth control, lol)
So if you name her after your mom and middle name your maiden name, won't it be nearly identical to your mom's name? It would be your mom's first and last name?

Go for it. It's a real name and not common at the moment. Lots of nicknames - one will probably develop organically but Bea or Bebe or even Babe (like Babe Paley) would be cute.

What do you think OP? I think Barbara isn't a bad name and will probably come back around sooner than you think. I'm a nickname person myself. I nickname everything and prefer nicknames to real names any day.
