If you rent a condo or villa then you're cooking and cleaning, which is not the easy, laid back vacation.

OP, we are looking into a similar trip and a friend of mine who I trust completely recommended Paradisus La Esmerelda on the Riviera Maya. She is going for the third time this summer with their 3 kids (ages are 9,7 and 5) and she said she usually pays $3000-$3500 for a week. melia.com is the hotel company website, but I know the first time my friend went she booked it through Costco vacations. She raved about the food as well and it looks like they have a kids club.

I've been there and the beach there sucks. Thick mangroves blocking any view of ofbthe ocean from the hotel. The actual beach is covered in seaweed. I think it is great that the mangroves are protected, but when i was there, i easily could have been at a reaort in Scotsdale justbthe same.

Ive been to dozens of these resorts and this one is one I would never return to.

I hate to sound so spoiled, but I've been all over the Caribbean ad nauseam. If you are in an all inclusive, it doesn't matter where you are. Heck, you could be in Florida. Food is prepared for the masses, all you can do it pick a highly rated rraort to get top shelf troth food and pray yiu dont get the shits.

I'd pick Punta Cana, it's faster than the 45min drive from Cancun to Riveria Maya. The passion fruit is the best in DR.

Riviera Maya. We loved the Iberostar Paraiso Maya.

Not OP, but just checked out this resort - it does say their kids club takes 3 yr olds (rare!) and this place looks lovely!! Thanks for posting! I will keep that on my short list for the future.

I would go with Riviera Maya, hands down. Lots of great resorts to choose from and there's some things to do off-resort if you're so inclined. Mexicans have been doing tourism longer than DR and it shows. I've not found a kids club in Mexico that will take a 3 yr old, so if it's important to you to get some kid free time, find a place with a babysitting option.

Finest resort in Playa Mujeres, just north of Cancun, is lovely. Higher end, family friendly, and they have suites with separate bedrooms for the kids. We had a fantastic suite with a rooftop pool and deck plus balcony and hot tub. Good kids club.
