Both my parents and DH's would try to pay. If DH and I planned on paying then we would (and not go out to eat the next week or two lol).

In this situation I would do as pp says, and tell the server to put sister and dh on my bill.

Ha. I'm PP 15:17 right above you. We're Chinese and it's the same thing. When my parents and their friends go out, there's often a major argument over who is going to pay.

I would provide my credit card upfront to the restaurant to pay for everyone as a treat for my sisters birthday. The next year I would either make it clear that I wanted the dinner to be private, and if it didn't turn out to be, I'd pay for just my husband and I and offer to take my sister out another time.

My parents would also try to pay, and I'm 37. They like treating my fiancé and I. They also do this for my brother, who is 41.

I'd pay for the original people I planned to. I'd have no issue explaining to my parents or aunt/uncle that this was part of my gift to her.

Third family like this. My parents at 91 and 85 still have positive cash flow and are still making money. They treat all of us regularly to everything when we get together. Mom wouldn't hear of us paying for things. My sister doesn't make much money, but both my brother and I have good incomes as does my wife. Mom still pays for everything. So, if someone invited extra guests, Mom would still pay. We have friends who moved from here to where my parents live. Whenever we go to visit my parents, we usually have dinner with these friends. Mom always picks up the tabs, even recently when they invited another family to join us for dinner.

My MIL on the other hand is living on a fixed income and we usually pay for everything when we do things with her. Recently she's been a little more sensitive since we've had a lot of kid-related expenses and when we go out, she'll often give me a little cash to cover part of her dinner. I usually pick up the check and let her control what and how much she pays me back. But if she invited anyone else, I would still pick up the check and let her decide if she wanted to give me any money and how much.

As parents, we always pay. I wouldn't want my kid to have to pay unless it was my own bday...and even then, I wouldn't really want my kid to pay.

In my family, my parents would pick up the bill. Aunt and Uncle would try for it as well. So would my DH, but he'd let my parents pay pretty easily haha.

In my DH's family, his sister would also invite 4 of her friends who are moochers. His parents would pay part of it, so would we, and it'd be totally awkward trying to get the random "friends" to pay their share. In reverse sister would never in a million years pay for a dinner for either of US. She'd let her parents do that.
