If you lived in the greater VA beach area, why in the hell would anyone go to thr OBX? Serious question.

Oh, no not Frednecksburg!

Agree, and no to Harrisonburg, also. Have lived in both.

Blacksburg is really remote for aging people.

Agree with Richmond posters, and would second the Charlottesville / Albemarle suggestion. If you live close to 29 it's pretty easy to get back into DC if needed.

i loooooove Harrisonburg! So many artists and interesting people there, plus I personally would be so incredibly happy having such access to all that the shenandoah had to offer. I would absolutely love to movebin town there, i found the perfect home once, but DH wouldn't go for it and the schools blow.

We spend a significant time in H'burg as 2yrs ago my brother got a position at JMU.

Winchester. It is about 45 minutes from Dulles airport. Housing prices are lower.

Domestic or international? Richmond has a fairly good domestic airport - direct flights to NYC, Boston, Chicago, ATL, lots of FL cities etc. If you want int'l then you'll need to leave Va or stay in NOVA. You could go to Charlotte or ATL then - better COL than NOVA but not that great compared to small Va cities; and ATL traffic isn't conducive to a slower pace of life if they still intend to work for a few more yrs.

I would want an airport. No areas mentioned has a large enough, or close enough airport.
