My husband retired very young. Well, what I consider very young. I don't really agree with it because of the work ethic idea, however he will receive payments for a decade for the business interest he sold. His "income stream" is higher now than when he worked, though.

Sometimes you have no choice on these matters. Mine was laid off in January. I make 240k and we are still quite comfortable. I miss having a huge surplus of cash, though. I also really hope he lands a job soon, hes really bummed not working.

Same as the other thread. An extra $400k. He makes more than that (as do I) but we don't need it all. Our priority right now is saving for retirement which isn't too far off so we don't want to step back from that. Anyway I'm not going to make that much more so it's irrelevant.

My DH lost his job so for now I'm the primary breadwinner. I make 250k. It is still comfortable. Would not feel comfortable doing this indefinitely because of the huge loss of retirement contributions and the compounding effect over many years.
All i have to say people is sometimes these scenarios you throw out there aren't always hypotheticals and you dont always uave complete control over your employment status.

I'm single with two kids and make $230. I'm paying for a nanny, and two kids in preschool. If I had a stay at home dad I wouldn't have to pay for a nanny. We would be comfortable. We'd have to stick to a budget to make sure retirement and college stayed on track.

We do it with a base salary of $175k and bonuses that are $0-$30k. When we started 14 years ago, the salary was $100k.
