So you were employed, but your parents weren't?
My mom was a teacher and got home in time to get me to any shift starting at 4pm (none started before then on a week day) and my dad picked me up at 7pm after work, or at 9:30 or 11pm - each of the times shifts ended (ice cream was 11pm on Fridays).
