smacs parents like you counting little micropoints in gpa give the whole program a bad name. really who cares?

You mean Foundation of Tec? It's an introductory class. Just relax. Your kid will be fine.

Well when your kid takes EIGHT classes a day and gets home at 5 pm….his hardwork should be rewarded with at least ……an honors designation for a mandatory class that is part of the smcs magnet block.

My DC just graduated from phs smcs and took full advantage of the program with great success. Their real rewards are not the tiny token points of GPA.

Humanities magnet is very one sided….. only about humanities, most humanities kids don’t challenge themselves in any other subject besides English and social studies classes. Majority don’t take any challenging science or math classes. The humanities house is considered the “npc” magnet bc no one talks about it or it doesn’t have any real impact on other students or the school. Just repeating back what my kid told me about the program. Kid is a rising senior in global program.

The Humanities kids say the same thing, when the science magents kids don't take any humanities electives or even a 4th year social studies.

The humanities kids don't use loser gamer terms like "NPC".

You are right, but the humanities kids call the smacs kids “nerds”. So stop painting the humanities kids like some kind of darling angels.

It's mandatory for everyone, goofy.

Your kid is rewarded with extra honors points for their magnet electives.

I just said their magnet class was not designated as honors, if they do take other magnet elective yes those are designated as honors just like for any other class at mcps school system. But when compar3d to other magnet houses, all their classes that are challenging are designated honors, so this puts a disadvantage to ALL smcs kids.

I asked my rising sophomore daughter who is in the humanities program at phs after reading the above post…..she says majority of humanities are girls like 70 to 30 percent ratio. With so many girls the dynamics is off and many of the girls are quite gossipy/mean/catty to each other ( think mean girls the movie).

She says most of the humanities take ap social studies classes and ap language class but the rest of the classes they take are just honors math or honors bio, which is minimally challenging. My daughter said there are zero humanities kids taking magnet precalc math offered for both her graduating class and the rising junior class. For context, in the global house their are 10-15 kids in the magnet precalc kids.

It is what it is……if you pick humanities be prepared to only take not stem challenging course….and even if your kid is interested in stem…once they enter their freshman year and realize that NONE of their humanities friends are taking advance stem classes…they too will not take them. I also believe the humanities house administration does NOT actively encourage the humanities kids to take advance stem classes. This is just my experience from the past 2 years at phs. YYMV.

This is completely untrue according to DD. Humanities kids are very much an equal presence in the school. They were many humanities kids in my child's honors math class and they are leaders in many clubs, a huge presence on sports teams, and take AP science classes. Your global child won't see them in science because global is cohorted for science. Is your global child mostly in stem activities? If so you might not see humanities students and might have a skewed impression of the school.

If you want GE, do it. SMCS classes are a bonus for GE students. D
But don't go to GE for a "SMCS-lite"
