From Bethesda I have to go with Vamoose for convenience. Bus is always clean and quiet. People are nice. I know you can walk around on the train, but for 4 hours I prefer not schlepping to Union Station.
That said, driving is my other choice.

Another person who lives in Bethesda and used to be a big train person but once we tried Vamoose That became our preferred option-- easier and takes time door to door than other options.

Yes, there's a garage. It's super easy.

We also live in Bethesda and either drive or take the bus. I can't stand the drive to Union Station while the different buses leave 5 minutes from my house. We don't mind driving in Manhattan. As PPs have said, flying is the last choice.

I prefer the train, but if the cost is way out there we have also driven to Jersey to one of the NJ transit stations that allows overnight parking and just taken local commuter rail into Manhattan. I've gotten stuck in some crazy traffic in Manhattan and sometimes it's worth a little inconvenience to make a quick escape.

Train. More relaxing, better scenery, you can walk around and get refreshments.
Agree with others that Acela is not worth the extra cost.

Train, for sure. Easy on, easy off -- takes you right into Manhattan. You can bring food, walk around the aisles, the seats are comfortable and there are power outlets and (reputedly) wifi.
