In response to this, here is our experience with Dr. Stern. He has seen us for three separate pregnancies.
The first time for an amnio, which went well, and the results were positive.
The second time, for CVS, but this time the ultrasound immediately revealed a very big problem (causing us to terminate). He went ahead with the CVS and he couldn't have handled the situation more professionally. He was our rock in a moment of absolute devastation and trauma.
The third time, for CVS, and again, he was very very good. Extremely sensitive to our past history, efficient, and warm.
I highly highly recommend Dr. Stern.

I saw Dr. Maclaren for my first amnio a few years back, and had no problems. He did a great job. I am actually going back to him tomorrow due to some complications, then again next week for a nuchal fold test (sp?) at his new office. I'll write again after I see him this time.

I'm just curious how people can say that a doctor is "excellent" at an amnio - frankly, you only know that they did a good job if you miscarry or not (and in addition, a M/C might not be due to doctor error - there could be several other reasons why you miscarry within a week after the procedure). It's a 5 minute procedure -- what could make someone "great"?

I had an amnio with Dr. Larsen at GW, and it was fine - no problems - so I guess I can say he's excellent. But people need to understand that stats that doctors give are not necessarily 100% believable. Numbers can be manipulated, or interpreted in a way to give them favor. They are providing their OWN numbers - it's not like an independent board is providing numbers.

Anyway, OBs who have been doing the procedures for 20+ years at a reputable institution (e.g., GW) are probably all pretty good. None of us really know - we just know that we liked the OB who did our amnio and we didn't m/c. Am I wrong?

I had an AWFUL experience with Dr Katz, he does not have a good reputation in the area and many other perinatologists get calls wanting to switch AWAY from Dr Katz. He even lost staff due to their unhappiness working there. Do not go there.

I would HIGHLY recommend Dr. Rodney McLaren - GREAT staff (at his Fair Oaks office) and he's a first-rate doctor. Went to him for my two pregnancies.

Absolutely agree with the recommendations for Greater Washington Maternal Fetal Medicine! Dr. Manley did mine.

No one better than Harvey Stern.

Ditto Dr. Stern at Genetics and IVF Institute. Great staff, pleasant place, both a friend and I had great experiences there. Very experienced, very impressive background, great sense of humor, puts you at ease. Good luck!

Dr. Jon Katz who is a former colleague of Dr. McLaren and is at Virginia Hospital Center Maternal and Fetal Medicine. I just had one with him and it other than not having to have one, it could not have gone any better. He has a lot of experience with chromosomal abnormalities. Additionally, the staff at VHC is very nice and that really provides comfort.
