It will deduct from your co-workers account and won't show on your joint account.

Can you use a DIFFERENT bank to set up an account to keep your money more secure?

They are going to want your home address, even if you give them an alternate address to use. I wouldn't risk this. Keep the money in cash and once you have escaped, use your new address and open the account then. Because you are still married, if you open an account now, even on your own, anything in it will be a marital asset. Easier to just keep it in cash--and if you can keep it at a friend's place, even better, so that he does not stumble upon the money and figure out what your plans are.

He uses Mint? Mint tracks your credit score. Will the credit inquiry to open an account show up in Mint? Does anyone know?

Christ, I didn't think of that. THANK YOU. Ugh.

+1 on going to co-worker's bank and cashing. Or, you can ask the co-worker to give you the cash if possible.

If you open a bank account of your own, be sure to have the customer service agent change the statement status to "do not mail". This is critical, otherwise your statements and other docs will be mailed to your home. I work for a bank regulator..I know this is definitely an option that you have.

I pray that you will soon be able to get out and find a safe haven.

Very few banks will allow a third-party endorsement anymore, they usually make you deposit it and then separately transact for the withdrawal/transfer

+1 on opening a new account with the check. Otherwise, where are you planning on hiding the cash? And what would happen if he were to ever find it? That's what you have to be prepared for, him finding your stash could trigger something very bad for you. Unfortunately, he could discover it and then not let on that he knows about it while he is plotting his very bad thing - so please, please please be careful with all of this

Take this opportunity to open a new account, as suggested above. Then you can put cash there and avoid the risk of having cash on hand that you might have to explain.

Is the check for enough to start a new account at a different bank than the one your joint account is at? I mean one that lets you carry a low balance till you've had a chance to build it up. That would also give you a safe place to keep your emergency fund where he can't get it.

Sorry about your situation, and wishing you well.

I cash my son's checks at my bank and it never shows up in our account.

I didn't have a bank account when I got my first job (in HS), so I would sign my paycheck over to my boyfriend, and he would cash them for me, until my mom could find time during banking hours to take me to open my own account.

Sorry, it's been 20 years: you wrote "pay to the order of Larla Jones" then sign.

This is a good idea.
