Children are always put first. But as I am their teacher and not their parent, my own children and family come before my students. So I won't jump through hoops parents may want or even expect me to. I won't work until 9pm every night for other peoples' children for $60K/year with 13 years experience and a Master's degree. At the end of the day it's my job, not my life. So, yes, children do come first. But my own come before yours. Many teachers feel the need to apologize for putting their own family first. I am not one of them.

To the PP: Right To Work prohibits collective bargaining. I know that. It also prohibits membership in a union as a requirement for employment. That is what I stated earlier. Don't know what you're waiting for.

Just a general understanding of the point of unions. Being called a union and having memebers is essentially meaningless without the ability to collectively bargain and strike.

Why don't you put your own children first and quit expecting teachers to do your job.

I started my teaching career in NY and moved to VA. The lack of a union in VA had no difference in my desire to do well for my students and impress my administration. What the union did help with was to push back against BS administration demands in NY. That i miss!

PP who worked in union state and FCPS. Yes, my previous state was also New York and, based on my experience in NY, I will always be impressed by education in that state. When I came to VA, they told me my license would be good anywhere because it was from NY.

There are no unions in VA. Teachers can join a professional association like the VEA, which will pay for legal costs if you need them cor job related issues.

I have worked in both situations (union and non union FCPS).

It was difficult to get a job in the union state so they hired only the best. It was a much more professional environment. Classes were smaller and yes, pay was higher. The teachers worked hard. Slackers were not tolerated. In fact, I was on one year contracts with no continuance for two years (had to actually reapply each year) while they "checked me out". In FCPS I got a continuing contract right away.

Of course this was just my experience. Both school systems were mainly middle to middle upper class suburban families.
