We went with another couple so we took turns waking up early and staying out by our chairs. 2 of us would hold 4 chairs. Then we took turns going to breakfast b/c I didn't want to be "those" people who disappeared while holding chairs. Now that I typed it all out it sounds kind of lame

To the contrary. It's is very efficient for 12 Germans to elect 1 to wake at 4 am to reserve seating for 12 who don't arise until noon.
