Agreed. That said, many of my favorite bands never see the light of mainstream airplay.

It's just a media designated punching bag. In terms of just pure pop composition, Nickleback songs are pretty universally well done. But, because of this fact, their songs appeal to a wide audience, including people who the media deems totally unfashionable and uncool. As such, they have been slapped with a "pariah" label
