There's a first time for everything, including stepping out of one's bubble, and these are adults. They'll be fine, and if they encounter issues, they'll figure out how to deal.

They will be fine. I drove there when I was 19 with a bunch of girlfriends to visit another friend at Columbia. We had the best time. I was raised in a Rich, sheltered, bubble suburb too!

Agree. Rudy Giuliani's stop and frisk REALLY cleaned up the city compared to the 80's under Ed Koch where muggings on the sidewalk in broad daylight were common.
SInce NYC has turned back towards socialism with mayor Bill de blasio, it's not as safe as during the early 2000s, but at least it's not a bad as Chicago... yet.

It may be a terrible idea but, since they aren't your kids and they are 18 than nothing you can do.
