The best way to think of it is this:

Gay is gay
Lesbian is lesbian
Bi is bi
Trans is trans

Queer is ..... someone who may be any one of these, or none, or more than one. But they choose to identify as queer, rather than something else.

But it's wrong to assume that every GLBT person is a queer. In that context, the word acquires a similar connotation to "fag".

I don't think you're using the term "queer" properly, just FYI. Not all lesbians identify as "queer", and not all queer-identified people are genetically XX chromosomed.

The context with which you're using "queer" is bordering on derogatory, although I don't think that was your intention



NP here - I was taught that queer was fine to use for anyone not straight-identified - by the LGBTQ community at Smith College. Should I not trust that education?
