Subject: Does your teen's school allow headphones?
My kid's HS allows them to listen to music during study hall and at their teacher's discretion in class.
Both kids have shown me how they get away with listening to music in class when they're not supposed to. Thread the earbud through a hoodie sleeve, place it in your ear, and then lean that ear on your closed fist on the desk. The preferred method for boys seems to be just straight up pulling up their hoodie hood and threading them around the back of their ears.
I've done my required parental warnings and frowning over the practice, but when I was in HS, I'd work crossword puzzles instead of taking notes. Or I'd photocopy a chapter of a novel and read that instead of the required textbook reading in class. Kids will be kids blah blah blah.

Subject: Does your teen's school allow headphones?
DDs school requires them. Otherwise they can't have audio if they need to watch a video on their playlist. They'd be asked to remove them if they tried to wear them during a class discussion or lecture though.

I work at a suburban MD public HS. The students are allowed to listen to music in the hallways, during lunch, and whenever a teacher permits it. Do some of them them try to sneak it daily? Yes. Do I have to ask kids to turn off their music and they can't hear me ask them because the music is too loud? Yes. Do I actually care? Not really, but when said kids aren't doing well it will eventually become my problem, so I enforce the policy.

I work in a city school and some of the MS teachers allow headphones or earbuds and others don't. Not allowed at my kid's Catholic school although they do use ear buds occasionally to listen to short audio and video clips.

I think it depends on the teacher and the task assigned. I allow my 8th grade students to listen to music if they are working on a vocabulary exercise or something small.
Sometimes we need them for videos and for personalized assignments e.g. some kids watch a video, some can skip it and do the practice exercises, etc.
Technology is a tool that has to be managed wisely. I'm sure some kids are bragging about not paying attention and some teachers use the technology as pacifiers. As with anything there is a range of uses, some acceptable, others not.
