Yeah, that one was a head scratcher. She's extremely liberal - had an internship on the Clinton campaign and an Organizing for Action fellowship. That's not really concerning at all.

My kid goes to Brown. Loves it.

I will say that while it's still the "crunchy" Ivy, I think the reputation for hyper-liberalism is a little outdated in 2 ways. 1, a lot of other schools have moved Brown's way. For example Yale, Harvard, even Georgetown (traditionally less liberal) are grappling with their histories as enslaving institutions. What was once an outlying progressive initiative is becoming mainstream.

2, the idea that Brown kids are hippies and/or not academically motivated. With today's hyper competitive admissions environment, the kids getting into Brown are very high achievers - its acceptance rate is lower than Penn's. My kid's experience has been so positive in part because his peers are bright kids who were attracted to Brown because they genuinely love learning.

Not to mention, Providence is great. Congrats! She will love it

But an "outspoken, fundamentalist" atheist will fit right in, as will an "outspoken" liberal. It all depends on what you're "outspoken" about. It has to conform to current leftist orthodoxy.

An outspoken, fundamentalist religious person is probably going to struggle to get along at Brown. But someone like that is going to struggle anywhere outside of a Bible college.

Someone who is religious, but respectful of others, and not given to forcing their views on non-believers, will probably get along fine -- as is the case basically anywhere.

I'd say almost anyone can find a niche at Brown.

Side note: lots of prep school kids taking gap years, so freshman classmates can be a year older. Friend found this and other things daunting, but loved the school and friends made there.

That will be hard at times. A relative who is a somewhat religious, but far from Orthodox, Jew found a lot of hostility towards people who religious, regardless of religion. More broadly, she just found it a strange place. In many ways, it was so progressive that it was very close-minded, whether we are talking politics or things more prosaic such a dress style.
