+1 I wish OP would come back and explain why she thinks these relatives potentially don't know her daughter's name. Does she never see or speak to them, ever? Then who cares how they address their Xmas cards?

I use mailing labels because I want to spend my limited time writing short, hand written notes on the cards themselves. In my effort to streamline the label merging, I have Name and Family for most people with kids, and Name for those without kids. But sometimes I dont merge perfectly, and I end up with omitted child names or And Family to those with no children. I do my best to hand correct those, but at midnight last night, I might have missed a few. Please don't take it personally. I wrote a personal note in the card!

Too sensitive, especially since the label is computer printed. They may just print up a bunch or have them printed somewhere else. It sounds like they have automated the Christmas card process so it takes them as little time as possible to get done.

If they handwrote the address with "and family", then yeah, weird.

Cards are painful enough without adding kids names. If a couple has kids, I address to "The Brown Family," this includes my SIL/BIL and my niece. I don't sign them. Wish I had the time but didn't even cross my mind that someone would take it personally.

It's not. I am willing to bet B/SIL went and added "and family" to everyone that had kids recently, and continued on with their mail merge.

I swear, some people just WANT to take offense at something.


I tend to agree. I address cards to families as "The Smith Family", if there is more than one last name, then it is "The Smith | Jones Family". But I would bet that BIL and SIL took their list from last year, and just added & Family at some point rather than edit to take out Larla and Larlos names.

It's slightly different. This is a manufactured problem. OP is being overly sensitive and needs to learn not to get worked up over everything. I doubt this is isolated.

OP, would you really be okay with them saying "&family" if you had 3 children? Would that mean you love the other children less? Because it would only take an extra 10 seconds to write the other kids' names. Can you see how there has to be a line somewhere and it's not a personal slight?

Last year we did not send any cards.
This year, if we do, they will perforce be Happy New Year's cards

So cut your brother some slack. He probably mindlessly does the labels and adds "and family" to any couple with children, whichever the number.
