I think that many suburban, idolize "getting the right man" types, absolutely live for Kate Middleton. She's very safe, she has never done anything offensive, and she's "goals" because of her marriage situation. She's not who I would idolize, but I get it.

I agree. To marry a man in the public eye, you have to be comfortable with being "on" much of the time. You have to be willing to smooth out your strong opinions and quirks in order to maximize your likability. No thanks.

Most of the women you named, with the possible exception of Kate Middleton, are extremely outgoing, good conversationalists, strong women who are fun and good in various social situations, able to steer a conversation and charm a variety of people.

That's really the clincher in deciding who will marry "well" and who won't.

Yet the women who marry men like these are not independently successful or even necessarily "extraordinary."

Kate Middleton landed the most eligible bachelor of modern times. She was just a skinny rich white girl.

Nancy Reagan was a mediocre hollywood actress.

I think women who marry extraordinary men and have successful marriages are very good at putting their husband's everything before themselves. They are good at being his partner.

Kate Middleton's entire life and personality is about being William's wife, not about anything she wants and desires. Michelle seems a bit less like this but honestly it seems like the same situation, she sacrificed her own career for his. Even her strength and outspokenness contributes to the 'Obama' brand.

By definition in a lot of ways, this means it is an unequal partnership. The marriage is there to support the man, not the couple.

Not for me that's for sure.

This is a silly question and op is like many women who are define themselves based on the succes of their man. No self identity. It's his success he worked hard for it. Go do your own work and be successful and you'll attractive a likeminded successful professional like yourself. Michelle Obama was and is a successful professional women just like her husband.

+1 With the exception of MO, none of these women are extraordinary. Just luck/persistence.

Instead of dodging OP's question, here are a few thoughts:

1--Woman must be in top-tier herself. Great schools (e.g., Princeton, St. Andrews, etc) and/or professionally successful (well-known actresses)

2--Woman must be able to sniff out potential in mate, if not obvious already (e.g., royalty). Some people have this ability to find people who have that X-factor

3--Woman must be able to persevere alongside her mate for the long haul, through thick and thin
