My dear friend's husband had a child out of wedlock. He stayed with his wife, they continued to have kids of their own. He tried to be a father to the baby, but the other woman wanted all or none. She took the baby and moved across the country. Now he's a child support only father.

How long - about 6 weeks, give or take.

I don't want to give too many details but I didn't regret it right away. I believe I was harboring some resentment that I didn't even realize I had. Over time, I came to realize how much I would lose in my wife and children if it ever came out. Once I got to that place, guilt and shame began eating at me. Eventually, I did something that caused my wife to figure things out, years after the affair and after it had ended. Guilt and shame multiplied by a thousand as everyone knew our business and I wasn't sure if I would lose those things most important to me. I picked a tree just outside the wall of our backyard where I'd sit down and take care of things. I can still picture that tree in my mind very vividly today.

That's a place I don't ever want to go back to and don't recommend to anyone ...

The pregnant wife started to have "symptoms" and passed it off for a bit as pregnancy related. As time passed, she felt like something was terribly wrong. She went to the ob-gyn and they did tests, and the baby was not viable due to chlamydia that the baby and mom both got from dad. Baby was over 30 weeks and healthy up to that point. Dad said nothing. After testing confirmed Dad had it, he admitted it. I know the baby was stillborn and had catastrophic illness from the std.

She's a mess, as she should be. I don't think she will ever recover. He still is not remorseful. It's a case study in the hell humans foist upon their loved ones.

This is so tragic.

For the politician's wife who moved away and left the kids, even if the couple is back together, how could the kids forgive her desertion??

My business partner, married 4 kids, one special needs. Years long affair, he apparently promised to leave his wife if she left her husband. She did, he didn't. She went ballistic, told his wife everything.

He and wife are still together.

Yeah, that was bad all around and from every angle.

^This. I think recovery happens often in very religious communities.

Friend surprised her husband with a visit to his company apartment in city where he traveled weekly. The woman was there and had obviously been staying there regularly (clothes in drawers, closet, cosmetics in bathroom). Wife really had NO idea this was going on. The couple are now counselors for a Catholic marriage counseling program and have helped a lot of people get over affairs.

My sister had an affair with a person who was a Fed and reported to her husband, also a Fed. I guess it doesn't count because my sister divorced. But can you imagine having to go into work and see the guy who was screwing your wife? Affair Guy's office was magically moved into a corner of a drafty leaky basement sub room.
