Mine isn't messing with our tree at all, he's not quite 1 so I'm pleasantly surprised. Is there a problem with the pine sap/water that is bad for the cat?
It dries out the tree which causes the needles to drop and also makes the tree a fire hazard.

Haaaaaa. But technically it was Snots the Rottweiler who drank the water. The fried pussycat just ate the light string.

Our first came tree finally died last year after 5 years with our 16 pound Siberian (and she's on a he small side!) climbing the tree and the branches bending so heavily that there were huge gaps in the tree!! The first few years, she made it to the top. The last few years, only the bottom few branches. The tree swayed so much the first few years, I thought it would topple over! New tree is much smaller and she's heavier, so can't climb anymore - but obviously tried because one bottom branch is already bent.
Agree that Apple Bitter spray was the only thing that worked, but you had to spray it every day.

Our problem was the cat climbing the tree. We tied it to a hook in the ceiling.
