I like to read a chapter from one of the Ramona books. In Beezus & Ramona, the chapter about Ramona inviting her whole class to her house for a party and not telling her mom has been a big hit.

I usually read something sort of classic but exciting like Blaze and the Forest Fire. it is short enough you can read the whole thing.
