Change it up to use whatever punishment works and follow through. In our house, "shut up" would have meant a good pop on the bottom. But I get that parents in DC never spank. We have never tolerated disrespectful behavior. At five, your daughter should know better.

Eh, my kids are grown, we're great friends. Discipline has worked for thousands of years and all of a sudden you want to reason with your kids. If it worked, it would have been done years ago.

Sorry, but that's the kind of bullying parenting that I'll just create more anger and resentment. Your elementary aged kids may be "well-behaved" as a result of this kind of discipline, but wait until they hit their teens.

The best way to deal with disrespectful behavior is a commensurate consequence, I,e, revocation of a privilege or allowance, etc. and, parents moving respectful behavior -- towards each other and toward their children.

It's a bit much to treat your children disrespectfully -- roughly and vengefully -- then expect them to treat you respectfully.

What?! My children have never told me to shut up. What school is she going to?!

My kid is slightly older. At a different school past few years, transferred and the language out of him is horrible. When I have been in the classroom, he's clearly copying and experimenting.
