Here is how I would handle it - "We do not say shut up. Ever. Not to mommy. Not to daddy. Not to sister. Not to our friends. Not even to the dog. I have told you twice not to say that. The next time you use those words, you will spend the rest of the evening in your room by yourself. And you will go to bed with no dessert and no story time. Do you understand me?"
Change it up to use whatever punishment works and follow through. In our house, "shut up" would have meant a good pop on the bottom. But I get that parents in DC never spank. We have never tolerated disrespectful behavior. At five, your daughter should know better.
