At 44, I'm in good shape but I definitely get hurt more easily than I did 10 years ago, and recovery is longer and harder. But I still love the thrill of competition and doing something that makes me test my physical limits! I have a lot of friends who play sports and get hurt, but I also have plenty of friends who have hurt themselves just stepping off a curb wrong or pulling something while shoveling.

DH tried to play in a rec soccer league. He is fit and in shape. He went with a friend. The first day, his friend tore his ACL and DH broke four ribs.

I maintain a level of fitness since my 20s--weights, cardio, cycle, crosstrain. 6 days per week since college. Now a 45-year old woman.

My out of shape coworkers that play in the league with me have had some horrific injuries. They also act like they are still 20 and do some risky shot.

well aren't you special

Pretty common. I played flag football and kickball, there were several injuries in both.

There is a guy on the radio (talk radio) who constantly brags about how good his YMCA pick up basketball team is.

YMCA?

Seriously?

Like who outside of him and his friends really care about that?

At least the Wizards (as terrible as they are) are getting paid to lose.

Why would the games have to "mean something"? And what does it mean for a game to "mean something"?

Lots of adults continue sports they played when they were young or learn new ones. They want to stay active and they enjoy doing it. It also helps to stay in shape.

My neighbor travels frequently to a far away country and uses the hotel gym while he's there. He runs in the treadmill and he's noticed that the men from that country will only walk on the treadmills and they seem to find that physically tiring. He doesn't want to end up like that.

50 year old Martial Arts Instructor and marathoner here. I get hurt all the time. Right now I have a broken finger (my whole hand is in a hard cast) and a stress fracture in my foot. It's worth it about a million times over.

It's not about that. It's about playing a sport you love, because you enjoy it! My husband is 51 and has played hockey for 40 years. I dread the day he gives it up-- it's a huge part of his life. It makes him happy!

Rec league bragging rights?
