I have PA/PT family members that have a Ph.D. but they do not call themselves doctors in social settings. They are Dr.'s on published papers.
My psychologist family member expects to be called doctor though.
Psychiatrists, Veterinarians, Physicians are all medical doctors.
Physical therapists, psychologists may hold doctorates in medical professions, but they are not medical doctors.
FWIW, I called lots of my professors in college Dr. So 'n So, but it was always clear that they were not medical doctors.
If I met a veterinarian who insisted on being called "doctor" I'd laugh in her face. Give kitty her annual shot and shut up.
Physical therapist degree is not a PhD, it is "Doctor of Physical Therapy".
