Since you're installing the top rail along the whole wall, you can just tap a finish nail into the wall every half inch or so until you find a stud. Rail will cover the holes. Other studs will be 16" on either side.
I've probably done six closets and it's never taken longer than 15 minutes to get that top rail up. Agree that it takes as long to peel off all the stickers as it does to hang all the pieces up. And once you've done one closet you can do every subsequent one in a flash.
