For toddlers ages 3 and up, the best program is the Dolphin Interactive Program. This takes place in the dolphin lagoon, but on a platform submerged in shallow water no deeper than 3 feet. Knowing how to swim is not a requirement, as the idea is to interact with the dolphins rather than swim with them. From the platform, toddlers (and everyone else) can pet, kiss, and shake hands with friendly dolphins.

I came home with a raging case of giardia after a swim with the dolphins at Atlantis. Would never consider doing again---especially with children.

I was actually just going to post that it is never acceptable to "swim with dolphins" because dolphins don't belong in "pools", but I think that, in the case of the dolphins described in article, it is OK. The article describes dolphins that live free in the open ocean. I think that if a boat approaches a pod of dolphins in the open sea and the dolphins don't want to interact, the dolphins will/can swim away.
I heartily oppose keeping the dolphins captive, but trying to swim with open-sea dolphins is OK with me.

Many places have a dolphin encounter vs. swimming with the Dolphins. Our family did a dolphin encounter where you stand in waist deep water and interact with the dolphin (no swimming). I held our 3 year old when we did it.

Not OP, but if you don't like it, don't do it. OP I have done it and taken my kids and it was an amazing experience that they still talk about. Don't let people dissuade you. These same people probably have no issue going to a zoo or an aquarium.
