One of the great men of American furniture design was Gustav Stickley who, in 1910 said:
"...I felt that the badly-constructed, over-ornate, meaningless furniture that was turned out in such quantities by the factories was not only bad in itself, but that its presence in the homes of the people was an influence that led directly away from sound qualities which make an honest man and a good citizen. It seemed to me that we were getting to be a thoughtless, extravagant people, fond of show and careless of real value, and that one way to counteract this national tendency was to bring about, if possible, a different standard of what was desirable in our homes."

As long as possible. Why it's important to get something classic, not trendy.
No such thing, except for certain antiques and even so "brown" furniture is out.
For me, until I'm sick of it.
We are using a dresser that is over 60 years old (was bought by my in laws when they first married and they are in their mid 90's now). Yes, it was a light color, but we sanded and refinished it to a darker color, put on new hardware and it looks great. It is solid maple, very heavy, well built. It will last at least 3 lifetimes. It's in our son's room (he's away at college now).
We bought custom made furniture for our own bedroom years ago. Solid cherry. Easy to live with style. I'm sure our son will be deciding whether he wants to keep it or not. It shows no signs of wear. Hardwood Artisan (when we bought it the place was small and called The Loft Bed Store).
Don't buy at Marlowe. Buy quality and keep forever. At least on pieces you need to function well.

We've had ours for at least 20-25 years and probably won't change it until we downsize. DS's bed is an antique (belonged to my great grandparents) and will be around for a while, but the rest is PBTeen stuff that will go when DS is done with college. DD has a mix of stuff. Some we will keep, some is more teenager stuff.

We've told the kids they can take their bedroom furniture with them once they get their own places after college ... or they can leave it with us. Either way, there is lots of good life in it and either they will use it or we will. Two kids have already said they want theirs when they move out. The third is on the fence. The other two haven't started college yet so we'll see what happens.
FWIW, we use the bedroom set my parents purchased when I moved from a crib to a 'big girl bed'. So it has lasted 50+ years and is still going strong. Only downside is that our headboard had to be custom made to coordinate since my folks bought two twin size bed headboards. My folks had the headboard made as part of our wedding gift. My mom said at the time 'we just didn't think that far ahead'! LOL We still have the twin headboards out in the garage. Hopefully one of our future great-grandchildren will use it once we pass ...

I suspect i would not enjoy sleeping in any of the PP's bedrooms! Not into the antique or heavy wood look. I like to swap out every 10 years or so.

My daughter sleeps in an antique bed I bought right out of college from a woman whose grandmother received it as a wedding gift in 1899. It's beautiful and seems to have good karma!

So far, ours has lasted us 19 years. Its in perfect condition but DH wants to change it, for no other reason than he wants an upgrade. I don't see it happening any time soon, not with DD heading to college in 9 months.

Our furniture - forever.
Our kids - 5-10 years. We have moved a few times and changed the designs/layouts of their rooms. I didn't want to commit. When they are older we might get some nicer pieces but not a full bedroom set.
