+10000 this is the exact analogy I have used in conversations with friends across the political spectrum over the last several months. And they're ALL voting HRC - many of republican friends will cast a D ballot for the first time in their lives this year.

Look - if the democrats did something so irresponsible like nominating a completely unqualified and crazy person to run as president, and there was some career politician who I dislike but is nonetheless competent on the other side - something like a Kanye v. Cheney matchup - then I'd write someone in but no way in hell would I vote for Kanye. And if I lived in a swing state and it looked close, then yeah, I'd probably take a valium then go vote for old Vader.

OP here, I completely agree with your view of Trump, and being a Democrat I have never had any intention of voting for him. My question is what do you really expect Republicans such as my mother, to do? Yes, she thinks Trump is just as disgusting as we do, yet being a Republican, she still for the most part agrees with his view of how the nation should run. Is she supposed to put that aside and not vote for him just because he's a pig? Would Democrats do the same if the situation were reverse?
Yes, I would hope that people have enough of a moral center that if it is revealed what a disgusting human being their candidate is they will not vote for him. And that includes me, an ardent Democrat who has never voted for a Republican. I love this country more than I love the party and could not vote for someone who has behaved like Trump, no matter how liberal his views.

It depends on who the republican candidate was. I could have voted for Mitt Romney. I certainly could have voted from George H. Bush. I could have voted for McCain. As long as they were somewhat moderate, I could have switched.
