I walked off the field crying midgame when I was 6 and never went back. That should tell you how much I enjoy soccer/understand it and even I could coach my 4 year olds team. They aren't doing any complicated plays you have to figure out!

OP here, so all you Moms on here would be ok with coaching your kids soccer? I am surprised. I know nothing about the sport myself. I just wanted DD to have some fun for an hour once a week. Didnt think that was selfish.


Everyone should volunteer somewhere. If you don't want to coach, you can be the "team mom." Or volunteer for the snack bar, or the leagues board of directors, or something.

I did it one season when no one volunteered, even though I didn't have any soccer experience. It wasn't my preference, but I did it because someone has to. If you want to be the "not my problem" parent, find a place where they provide coaches. You'll pay three times as much, but that's your choice.

Then you should pay the full freight for a gymnastics class, not show up for a $10 open gym and expect a coach. OP paid the going rate for a parent-volunteer program, and that's what she got. There are other options that don't involve parent coaches, they just cost a few dollars more. I realize OP didn't understand this when she signed up, but I'm willing to be that information is available on the league website.

I think what everyone is saying that whoever coached your kids in a $60 rec league aimed at 5 and 6 year olds is often coached by volunteers who more often than not know very little about soccer. You were never guaranteed a pro coach.

I signed my kid up for gymnastics assuming there is a gymnastics coach and I will not have to teach her class myself. I also signed my kid up for swimming lessons assuming there will be a swim teacher.............If I pay for private school I assume I will not be asked to teach the class.

I sent an email Friday evening and got one back saying yes it was cancelled, but neither I nor my friend got an group email saying it was cancelled.
This week we get an email saying that the fill in Coach cant do it this weekend but she can lend one the parents cones and some instructions if one of us can volunteer.
I am done at this point. I dont want to volunteer and I wouldnt have signed up knowing there were no other teams in this age range and no coach. I think they should have offered everyone a refund in the begining.
On Tues eve this week I sent an email to the fill in Coach/organizer person saying I wanted a full or partial refund. I have not heard back.
Thoughts?

Conventional wisdom in soccer circles these days is that U5 soccer should hardly resemble soccer.

Yes there was supposed to be a coach. We did it with the same league in the Spring and there was a Coach. It was a little disorganized but not too bad. This fall just seems very disorganized.


Are you sure it was a coach from within the organization, and not a parent coach who volunteered when they registered so they didn't need to request one? Also, did you move up to a different level this fall (e.g., from tot soccer to rec)? Things will run differently at different levels.


Yes it was a parent coach in the Spring, His son was on the team. He knew what he was doing though and was good with the kids. We havent moved up at all.
I only have one kid and she is 4 so this is all relatively new to me. I didnt know it was all volunteer when I signed up.
