Any indication that other houses received weird notes too?

Shortly after we moved in to our house, someone wrote "Please kill yourself" on our door. Unfortunately, they'd also hit a few other houses on the street with various messages, including a racially charged one on a black family's home. We're also an interracial family, but didn't have kids at the time. The police thought it was just stupid kids and nothing else has happened since then.

I would be strangely curious about why the dog's face was included, and ask DS what he thought about that issue. Then, I'd forget about the whole thing.

Me too. Later I would casually ask your son about John Doe(s) and his relationship with them. Overall I think most kids just do stupid things.

My sons have written death threats to each other, probably around the same age. We talked about better ways to express anger. I think "I'm going to kill you" is pretty common among young children.

I'd reach out to your neighbor/girls' parents 1st and see if they know anything about it.

I mean, I guess you could do that, but really, if they knew about it, what are the chances that they would let the girls give your son the note? I would say about zero. I'd forget about it and move on.

This. And if you're fairly certain the girls helped to drop it off, regardless of what they say when you ask their parents, I'd keep an eye out for any mean behavior next time the kids play together.
