DC went to college in central PA. I was always amazed at how rural it is, and how many roadside adult entertainment places there are. It's super depressing.

We did the same drive and I completely agree. I had previously only been to Philly and t the Lancaster/Hershey areas so it was a bit of a surprise.

And the middle is Alabama.

I am from the middle. Assume you meant this as an insult.

You seem really sweet.

NP here. I know old people from Williamsport who have lived there for decades who freely say that "PA is Philly, Pittsburgh, and Alabama."

Why deny it?

That south-central part around Lancaster isn't really rust belt. Neither is Gettysburg, Carlisle, etc. State College. Those are the religious, farming areas.

But, Scranton is definitely Rusty. Erie, Pittsburgh, Allentown, etc.

None of what you wrote makes any sense, PP.

Grew up in Harrisburg/hershey - I found more culture shock visiting ohio than nj or NYC. So not sure where the rust belt part starts but it's west of south central pa. It isn't southern feeling either - def not Alabama.

Umm, you clearly haven't been there for decades.

Grew up there 50 years ago, half my family still lives there. The other half, inc me, left for greener pastures. Old money Philly is a dying breed, literally.

Just moved from there. Grew up in the country club set. You must not know the right people. Old money is alive and well.

+1. Same for Western NY, really. Way more in common with Ohio than the North East.

Yup. What a weird place.

+1. Most of the people posting here aren't from Philly. There isn't much of an economy in Philly anymore -- an old manufacturing city which is now just an ed-and-med city -- not much different than lots of other secondary markets out there.

Main Line is beautiful and a bastion of old money. Definitely east coast. Rest of the state is a dump.
