Don't forget to add the salary for the art teacher; about $90K.

It is that to leave for Fillmore, do the class and return takes nearly 3 hours. That's a nearly half of the instructional day.

Maybe that isn't a problem for the kids at the higher SES schools but those aren't the only ones at Fillmore.

You think 3 hours, once a week, for arts & music education, in elementary school, is a problem? Most Fillmore families would disagree, IMO...whatever their "SES" might be.

Charters neglect arts by choice. Name dcps schools without room for art and music rooms outside of the fillmore schools.

No not by choice. Because the $3000 per year per student they get for facilities acquisition and maintenance doesn't begin cover their renovation and maintenance costs.

So the instructional dollars cover facilities costs too, and when building they often cut out anything deemed non-essential to keep square footage low.

The more established charters that have been around for 10+ years can start to add these things (eg WL built a gym on its 10 year anniversary, Cap City after 15 years has a library and arts space).

+1000

Inequalities everywhere.

I'd actually prefer to discuss each school, public or charter, having a library. And a librarian.

They could fully fund fillmore by reallocating 1% of the Ellington renovation budget.

The "charter" situation is kind of irrelevant to whether all dcps kids should have access to an arts room.

In some other threads, people are complaining about the cost of a "kiln" that a lot of schools are getting, whereas if Fillmore closes the kids don't get a cup to spit in.

At key and stoddert no arts or music rooms. And no room for more trailers.

I don't think there's any DCPS school is without an art room these days, outside of the Fillmore schools who must go to Fillmore to get the same things. I wouldn't call that "plush" in any way...just equal to everybody else.

I guarantee you that fillmore costs less than renovating schools like key and stoddert where classes are overcrowded and kids are in trailers. Stupid money wasting decision by dcps, as usual.

They could just dream about doing art and music, at their homeroom desks, during "art meditation" time. That would be creative, at least.
