I went to the Open House last Friday and I’m considering it for preschool age 3. However my first choice is Severn School. HT seems a bit overpriced for what you get AND tuition does not include the $800 registration fee AND $500 endowment fee for new students.

We transferred our kids to Holy Trinity from another private school. Best decision we could have ever made for them.

What year did your daughter (from the DC private) join HT? So glad to hear you are happy with it! Very reassuring. I wish we had more activity on this board, but grateful for the information that is available.

Browne is such an awesome school. Wish it were closer!
Thank you for the information about Kindergarten. Do you think teacher makes a difference? The two seem to have very different styles. Also I am happy to see grades 1-4 is in another building with a different director, so I feel perhaps we won't know enough with just the first year at Kindergarten. Don't know. Just putting it out there.
Regarding outplacement, I am a bit wary. The have a great history overall in the past 10 years, let's say, but I am not sure we can say the same from the past 1-2 years. Does anyone have any info on this?

Last year was my daughter's first year at HT. She came from a DC private. We have absolutely no regrets. There are about 12 students in her class (and most other classes) so there were no crowding issues. My daughter received plenty of attention from her teachers and performed really well. The school isnt perfect, but she came from an imperfect DC school ($35k a year) as well. Show me your perfect school and I will show you the lies youve been sold! Barring any major issues, she will be there through eighth. Outplacement at Holy Trinity is excellent.

Where will she go instead? Another private or public?

The biggest complaint I've heard is about the overcrowding.

Private - Browne Academy in Alexandria. I live in Upper Marlboro. Its about a 25 minute commute in traffic. I timed it. I really wanted her to go to Bullis but I'm not sure if I want her to spend 45 minutes on the bus in the morning. They have a bus that comes to the shopping center on campus way where the Lowe's, Giant and Target is in largo. Riverdale would have been convenient but I don't want to have to keep transferring. Riverdale would be OK through 5th. Middle school you would be looking for another option all over again. Riverdale for middle school and high school is a mess.

I think ultimately you made the right choice for you if you did not have a positive experience and you did not feel like the school was in the same tier as the Big 3 or independent schools in Annapolis that you applied to. There are schools out there for everyone. People can have positive or negative experiences at any school whether it is HT, the Big 3 in DC or independent schools in Annapolis. All anyone has to do is read any of the posts on the independent forum to know that even the Big 3 can have its issues.

PP 9:45 here. We applied at Top 3 independents in DC, along with top independents in Annapolis. The interactions and process was much better at those schools. I suppose HT isn't in the same tier as these schools, so I shouldn't expect the same from them. That may be my fault.

When I told her we were just starting our search and contemplating many options, she said "well we already have applications in for next year so..." as if she was saying I needed to hurry up and decide. The open house was in early November so I had a little time to make a decision. Didn't like that she was rushing me.

Fast forward a week or so, she called to follow up about whether we were going to apply. She kept talking about how they are the best school in the area and we won't find better. Seemed kind of abrasive to me but I understand their goal is to get applicants. I appreciated the follow up and took the time to ask questions. She offered to waive the application fee if we decided to apply. I thanked her and moved on.

A few days later, I sent her a Follow Up email saying that we would like to apply and I would be interested in the app fee waiver. No response. Called. Left a message. No response. I emailed again. She responds and says they don't offer app fee waivers. I'm like well, you offered it to me via our telephone conversation. No response. Emailed again. No response. I was done at that point. Decided to apply elsewhere and so far, two acceptances.

I would caution you not to judge an Admissions Director too harshly during admissions season (in terms of email responsiveness). They are bombarded with emails everyday and sometimes it is difficult to get back to everyone. Maybe she didn't remember what she offered or maybe she hasn't gotten to your email yet. You should judge the school based on the curriculum it offers, the contentment of its faculty and staff, and its reputation for graduating successful children. Other posts on this board about Holy Trinity are right. It is pretty much among the top three independent/private schools in the area. You will have virtually no contact with Admissions once your child is there.

I understand that, but I reached out multiple times via telephone and email. There's no excuse not to respond to any of my inquries. Everyone has a different experience, so I'm not bashing HT, I was just put off. I've heard other similar stories as well. But I also know several that love the school. Everyone should visit, interact and form their own opinion.

+1 -- I liked the Admissions Director. I was very impressed with the school overall.
