Just say, I will get back to you as soon as possible. "At my earliest convenience" does not convey what you think it does...

(sorry for all the crazy punctuation! I'm getting this one out quickly so that I can get my pulse back down to normal)

And just to pile on the corrections, did you notice that the OP said, "yer tryin to sound fancee"? Somehow you got the idea that the OP misspelled "fancy" but missed the "yer" and "tryin"? Ya think maybe that was some sarcasm from the OP? Just askin' mmmmkay?

No. It means the same thing as "I'll get back to you when I damn well please."

It must be tough going through life getting so worked up about meaningless stuff like this.

I've always thought it sounded super-tacky, like someone was play-acting at being professional.

Stupid argument, but I just called my voicemail to make sure I didn't say that on mine. He-he?

It think people actually think it sounds polite. Even though, if anyone with an IQ within normal limits thought about the actual words for a minute, they would realize it is rude.

"I will call you back as soon as possible" just sounds so much better.

Nailed it. And it seems that this thread is also falling into two camps. Those with the IQ threshold above who are guffawed and shocked that people say this (or just amused and think they are idiots) and those below who don't understand how words work.

I think you're splitting hairs. Who cares what the exact wording is on their voicemail?

"As soon as possible" implies there are things that need to happen in order to make this possible. I need to return from lunch, and find the information you've asked for, and send an email to my boss to confirm. Then I will call you.

"At my earliest convenience" seems to mean "I'll call you back when it's convenient for me, I've got other people to worry about, and a lot of shit to do, man."

Both meanings might be true, but the first example at least implies you're working on it. Or that you have their interests in mind.

LOL. It is pretty funny. It's actually such a pompous thing to say to someone, when you break down the meanings of the words.

It's basically "I'll get back to you when I feel like it, I'm in no hurry" but people think it sounds good cause it has big words.
